The heat is turning up outside and the sun is at its strongest meaning we are at higher risks of getting a sunburn while enjoying our outdoor activities. Ideally, you should apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher before going outside.

Mistakes can happen and sometimes you forget that you need to reapply your sunblock every two hours while in the sun. If this happens and you become burned, you should;

  1. Assess the damage. Sunburns can range from mild to severe, some resulting in blisters that eventually can cause scaring or even worse, skin cancer. The sun is at its strongest between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm so applying sunscreen every 90 minutes during those hours is crucial.
  2. Moisturize. After a cool shower, you should apply moisturizer cream or lotion that contains Vitamins C and E to the affected areas. Repeat this routine 2-3 times a day to avoid peeling or flaking.
  3. Hydrate. When our skin is badly sunburned, there is extra fluid loss from the skin. You should drink the proper amount of water to replace the fluids lost, and to also help cool down your skin.
  4. Medicate. It is okay to take an ibuprofen if you have been badly sunburned. The anti-inflammatory effect of ibuprofen can alleviate some of the discomfort and chills associated with severe sunburn.

It is important for you to take the proper precautions to avoid sunburns because not only are they uncomfortable and can cause nausea and dehydration, there are long term effects like skin cancer than can completely change your life forever. Be sure to always apply sunblock and wear the appropriate clothing for your outdoor activities!
